Six years ago, KJ was driving his go-cart home from his aunt’s house when he was struck by a car. The impact was mostly to his go-cart, but the accident threw him 55 feet before he came to a stop, unconscious and not breathing. KJ was airlifted to Batson Children’s Hospital where doctors treated his concussion, collapsed lung, broken pelvic bone and fractured spine. His injuries were so severe that he will most likely not walk again, but that hasn’t slowed him down.
KJ now thrives in wheelchair basketball as a Shark with the Lakeshore Foundation, and has also won gold medals in wheelchair archery, javelin, shot put, and wheelchair cycling. He was honored with the Rising Star Award from the Challenged Athletes Foundation and served as Mississippi’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion. Featured on Robin Roberts Thriver Thursday Good Morning America series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW-SZVQ-g48 and most recently part of the Runway for Dreams Foundation’s New York fashion event, KJ continues to inspire others and he’s as full of life as ever.
